How this calculator works

This calculator starts with the National Sleep Foundation's age based guidelines for recommended sleep duration. It then adjusts for two additional factors:

The deficit and weekly debt calculations show the gap between your estimated need and what you currently average. Sleep debt accumulates over time and affects cognitive performance, recovery, immune function, and mood.

Note: This calculator provides a general estimate. Individual sleep needs vary based on genetics, health conditions, stress levels, and other factors that a population based formula cannot capture.
